Have you ever wondered what American football really is and why millions of Americans go crazy for it every weekend?

I recently sat down with Kyle on our Elite Playbook podcast to explore what is American football and why it's captured the hearts of so many people. What I discovered surprised me – it's about way more than just the game itself.

Kyle explained that American football started from rugby back in the late 1800s. Players got tired during rugby matches and decided to take breaks between plays. That's how football was born! The name "touchdown" even comes from rugby – when you score in rugby, you touch the ball down in the "try zone." In football, you score a touchdown when you cross into the end zone.

But here's what really struck me during our conversation: American football isn't just about the NFL games on Sunday or college football on Saturday. It's about community. Kyle shared how in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, the entire city revolves around their team, the Cornhuskers. On game days, their stadium holds 87,000 fans – making it the third-largest city in the state! They've had 404 consecutive sellouts. That's dedication!

What is American football compared to soccer? While soccer matches can end in a tie, football games keep going until someone wins. Americans want a clear winner! The game has four quarters, and teams take turns trying to move the ball down the field to score touchdowns worth six points. After scoring, they can kick for an extra point.

Kyle helped me understand that football brings families and friends together. Yesterday, he watched the game with two other families he's known since kindergarten. While the kids played football in the backyard, the adults caught up on life. Some fans don't even go inside the stadium – they tailgate in the parking lot with grills, TVs, and games!

The Super Bowl is football's biggest event, but it's just one game out of an entire season. From high school football on Friday nights to the NFL on Sundays, each level has its own special atmosphere. Youth football now includes safer options like flag football, where kids pull flags instead of tackling, making it easier for beginners to learn football rules.

As someone who grew up playing soccer, I didn't understand football when I first moved to Nebraska. But once I started watching and learning the basics, I was hooked. Every Sunday, you'll find me in front of my TV watching the games.

The sport has evolved to be safer with new rules protecting players, especially quarterbacks. You can't hit players in the head or tackle below the waist anymore. While football remains a physical sport, these changes help keep top athletes healthy and playing longer.

American football might seem complicated at first, but once you understand the basics – like how teams get four tries (called downs) to move the ball 10 yards – it becomes incredibly exciting to watch.
